Another #freemiumfriday is here and we’re looking at our current favorite Android game, PerBlue’s Dragonsoul. This is an older title that was originally released in 2011 and has been continuously updated since. The most recent version, released last week, is 2.3.1.

At first, Dragonsoul appears to be just another RPG. The usual mix of dragons, centaurs, sexy fox ladies, orcs, healers, and orc healers, nothing special. But when a player gets stuck into it—something that’s fairly easy, since the game can go on for hours at higher levels—it becomes apparent that the developers put some thought into it. Punny names and odd items aside (why does my hero need so many sandwiches??) aside, leveling up heroes is just easy enough at lower levels to get you hooked and just hard enough at higher levels to keep you from giving up.

The game begins with Umlaut V kidnapping most of your heroes and turning them evil. You start out with Dragon Lady and Unstable Understudy (two female heroes!) and must free the rest of your compatriots.

Heroes are freed through gift boxes (rarely) and through the hard graft of the Elite Campaign. The Elite Campaign, unlocked at level eleven, gives the player three chances daily to earn the soulstones needed to bring heroes to life. Heroes require anywhere from 10-80 soulstones to summon.

Once a hero has been summoned, the player must continually upgrade them in order to advance in the campaign. Equipping new items and evolving with soulstones will require going back and fighting earlier levels over and over. This can feel repetitive, especially since players will want to concentrate on one hero at a time. Players should try to keep their individual team members on roughly the same power level so that the Expedition (unlocked at level 25) will be winnable.

In addition to the campaign, there are several other areas for players to visit. The Fight Pit, unlocked at level 10, allows you to put your top five fighters against other players. The Mountain, unlocked at level 14, gives you two chances to earn either gold coins or XP. Challenges, unlocked at team level 20, give you the chance to earn items needed to promote your heroes. The Expedition, unlocked at level 25, is a fifteen-round saga that lets you earn coins and tokens. The Coliseum, unlocked at team level 44, allows you to pit your top 15 fighters against other players in a three-round game. Note that on Sundays, there are more opportunities for Mountain and Challenge wins.

All of these areas should be taken advantage of by the player, assuming they have the time. Dragonsoul gives diamonds, gold coins, XP, and soulstones to players who perform the quests given daily.

There is also a social component to Dragonsoul. At level three, you are allowed to access global chat, but you’re better off waiting until you’re in a guild (level 15) and posting in that chatroom. Paid VIP members have their own chatroom. Players are now able to build friends lists and send private messages. Players are also able to block users.

Guilds are optional to join. However, without them, players cannot hire heroes to help out on their Expeditions and in the Coliseum, cannot participate in Crypt Raids, and cannot put their own heroes up for hire.

Leveling up happens fairly quickly. After about six weeks of free daily play, this reviewer was at team level 59, with 21 heroes at individual levels of 55/56. To put that into perspective, the level cap is 100 and there are 43 heroes in total.

There are very few drawbacks to this game and our biggest gripe is that the game sometimes returns an “Invalid Loot” error message when raiding. It does give you back your energy points, but it can be frustrating to encounter this message three or four times in a row. The second is that the Expedition sometimes pits players against those on other servers who have much higher skills than the player is able to obtain on their own server (all new players start out on Server 6, but the server with the highest upgrades is Server 1). But most foes are able to be defeated and this is only an inconvenience for the highest levels. Players are allowed to make an account of each server, so a player could simply make an account on Server 1 and achieve all of the possible hero upgrades in this game.

DragonSoul RPG is a brand new and extremely addictive game for the iPhone and iPad. I love the graphics and gameplay and I totally appreciate the humor of the game: it’s really one of the funnest game of the moment, and I am sure that you are playing it like crazy. We certainly do and decided to maybe help you a bit in your quest to get more stuff and beat all stages with some DragonSoul cheats and tips.

There isn’t really that much to talk regarding strategy and mechanics – it’s all about being active and a bit lucky when it comes to collecting your items, but there are still things you can do to improve your game – we’ll talk about them here in our DragonSoul tips and cheats article!

1. Use the special powers wisely
The only thing that you control directly in this game is the moment when you use the heroes’ super powers in battle: and that does matter a lot. Usually, it’s best to go with all of them ready to be used in the final stage of a battle, because that’s actually the most difficult one to beat.

In other words, don’t use your special skills late in the second stage but do use any skills that you have completely powered-up in the early moments of the stage to get the extra advantage and you will most likely have them all recharged and ready to be fired-up in the final, most difficult stage. The exception here is the healer whose special healing skill should be used as soon as it is available.

2. Level up your heroes
Your heroes automatically gain experience when completing a stage in the game, but you can also boost them up a bit by spending your XP potions on them. Try to always keep 5-6 of them on you for when you unlock new heroes (You can check out your progress on them in the heroes menu) but apart from that, don’t hesitate to use any extra ones that you have to give your heroes a boost and make them stronger.

3. Focus on promoting your heroes
When you battle, you get various equipment items during the fight and you can use those items to equip your heroes or craft items that can be equipped. Promoted heroes gain an extra boost in stats and they can equip new items (then get promoted again). Focus on promoting your heroes one at a time, starting with your top ones. However, any extra equipment that you have should be equipped to other heroes in order to get the boosts.

4. Don’t forget about the freebies
You get a free Silver Chest a few times a day, every 10 minutes, a Gold Chest every 48 hours and so on – there are a ton of freebies scattered around in DragonSoul, make sure that you get them all in order to speed up your progress in the game.

5. Do the daily quests/missions
Every day, you will get new missions and quests to complete (and they will include more freebies too) so make sure that you do them all on a daily basis in order to max out your progress as well.

6. Replay specific missions to get the required items
All items that you want in the game can be obtained by completing specific missions – you are not guaranteed to get that particular loot, but if you complete the mission over and over again you will certainly get a lot. So tap any item that you want to get and see where you can find it – then simply replay the mission using raids if you have them or the Auto raid option if you have it unlocked (after getting three stars in a mission).

7. Don’t forget about the versus mode
You can and should play against other players in the Pit in order to get even more and greater rewards. Be active enough and always select the easiest opponents to beat, based on their power and try to stay as much as possible up there at the top for some great rewards.

8. Evolve Your Heroes as soon as you have the chance
Evolving heroes in DragonSoul is not an easy task, but try to do it as soon as possible, even if that includes spending some money on it. Evolved heroes get great bonuses and are really worth the trouble. You need Soulstones in order to evolve heroes, and you can find them in Silver or Gold chests or by completing specific missions on Elite level.

Dragon Souls will allow you to play as a dragon in one of the available dragon flights: Black, Red, Green, Blue. The goal is simply collecting all of the relics scattered throughout the world. But, with denizens, cities, and other dragons out to take these same items from you, it's easier said than done.

The denizens of our world have no hope of standing against you. Your only real threat will be other dragons, which, of course, want the same thing you want and are willing to kill you for it.

This is a game about playing as a truly terrifying dragon, not lumbering reptiles with wings and one slow/avoidable attack. You should expect to always be on your toes, quickly moving and positioning while using a myriad of attacks. All of these abilities will be made more powerful with leveling and the expansion of your dragon's power.

Each player is in control of a single dragon which can battle in air or on land. Our combat system is fast paced and involves physical, magical, and ranged combat. As with other similar games, certain combinations of spells and abilities will naturally synergize. Can you find these combinations to maximize your progress, or will you be dominated by the other players?
